Skanska, one of the world’s leading construction and project development companies, used RPA and Digital Colleagues to automate processes that were time-consuming and prone to human error. This boosted not only efficiency and productivity, but also client satisfaction.
“We saw how humans and robots interact within a process and we found that, often, by tackling the simple tasks first then you can deliver 80% of the value quickly without needing to automate a process end-to-end.” -Christel Skoog • RPA Lead, Skanska
Robots are capable of executing enormous amounts of small tasks at speeds far beyond that of their human counterparts. This ensured processes were completed quickly and without human error, therefore raising customer satisfaction. This became especially evident in several areas of the Skanska business.
System Maintenance
By integrating RPA into their IT department, Skanska was able to reduce system Maintenance time from a day or more a week down to 30 minutes a week. This was achieved by appointing each operating process a human “buddy” who works with their digital colleague throughout the duration of the automation process, ensuring proper functionality and continuous system improvements.
Invoice Processing and HR
In 2018, Skanska introduced two new digital colleagues, Bob and HRobin into the business. Bob works with customer invoicing, payment processing, accounting journals, and task reminders. Bob functions in the background working alongside the staff only making himself known when an employee needs to act.

HRobin has allowed Skanska’s HR department to continuously automated processes. Before the implementation of RPA employees had to keep track of the millions of payment transactions, payroll processing is now almost completely handled by HRobin. What once took an employee a week out of every month, HRobin now does in five minutes.
Looking Towards the Future
“Improving efficiency and data quality is excellent. However, a big benefit for Skanska is that we’re also reducing risk.” -Christel Skoog • RPA Lead, Skanska
RPA and digital colleagues increase efficiency, productivity, and minimize company risk. Combined with AI and machine learning there are really no limits to what robotic process automation can do. Skanska is betting big on this future. Today, the company has five robots.
